The party traveled through the gate in the forest and found themselves in a large stone room with no apparent walls or ceiling. Deciding to take an extended rest, the party woke up in the midst of hundreds of slaad. (Or 40.)
The slaad led the party to a room the looked something like a courtroom, but had many open patches of fire on the ground. Once the party had taken up what may have been a proper position, three smaller slaad emerged from the wall and took up a position of a tribunal.
A different slaad questioned them in broken common and the party never really knew what they were being questioned about. With some thought, Lupa and Cael figured out they were being questioned about a book and their role in its recovery.
As far as the party could tell, they were impressing the judges and prosecutor with their case, but then they attacked.
As the party fought back, the walls to the room started slowly closing in on them, and even managed to trap one of the slaad in the walls. After a few more slaad died, and Cael too was trapped in the wall, the prosecutor slaad fixed his broken body, and told the party they had impressed the slaad enough to continue on and earned their journey home.
It freed Cael from the wall, and opened another gateway which it traveled through.
The party followed it through and found themselves standing on some pillars above an expanse of nothing with a pathway leading ahead with some sparkling lights in the distance.
While taking a minute to catch their breath, the lights grew closer. They ended up being little tornadoes of debris and death.
The party managed to kill them with only Fayden falling off the giant pillars. As he fell, he noticed he wasn't actually going down. Or maybe the pillars were falling too. Either way, he made his way over to the side of the next pillar and fell to a stop.
The elemental creatures were destroyed and the party stepped through another gate... into their basement.
[Update]
Cael found the following note in his quiver:
[text lost] and
that's the only way to get
out of there alive.
Also, Lupa found this note in the Handy Haversack:
The miners all have left.
Their treasure is bereft. Some
secrets must be kept.
